States vary on the types and amounts of activity that trigger the requirement for a business to register in the state.
Often, conducting one or more of these activities is considered "doing business" in a state:
- Opening a physical location in the state
- Hiring a new employee who resides in the state
- Regularly entering into binding contracts or repeatedly engaging in business transactions in the state
If you are registering in a new state because you have recently hired an employee who resides in that state, the date on which you began doing business in the state would be that employee's hire date.
