Product Release: Business Timeline
What is Business Timeline?
Business Timeline gives you a single, chronological view of all Secretary of State changes for any business: formation details, status changes, officer updates, address modifications, and filing events with diffs showing exactly what changed.
Business Timeline is currently in preview. Contact your account manager or support@middesk.com to enable it.
Available via API (GET /businesses/:business_id/timeline) or dashboard (Timeline panel on Business detail pages).
What information does Business Timeline show?
Formation events (incorporation date, initial registered agent, founding officers)
Status changes (Active, Inactive, suspensions, reinstatements, dissolutions)
Officer changes (directors, officers, managers added/removed)
Address changes (principal, mailing, registered agent addresses)
Registered agent changes
Filing events (annual reports, amendments, mergers, conversions)
Each entry includes the date, event type, specific details, state, and diffs showing before/after values.
How do I access Business Timeline via dashboard?
Via dashboard: Navigate to any Business detail page, scroll to the Timeline section or click the Timeline tab. Events display in reverse chronological order. Click any event to expand details and diffs.
Via API: Make requests to GET /businesses/:business_id/timeline using your standard API key. Date-based filters coming soon for polling workflows.
Do I need to use Business Timeline?
No. Business Timeline is an optional enhancement. Your existing Middesk integration continues working without changes.
Use Business Timeline if you want to:
See complete business change history without manually checking state portals
Poll for changes on your own cadence instead of webhook-based monitoring
Get context to triage which monitoring alerts require review
Understand business history and change patterns for fraud or compliance workflows
Build complete audit trails for regulatory requirements
How far back does Business Timeline history go?
Business Timeline shows all SOS change events captured up until the most recent Verify report was ordered, including formation data when available from the state.
For businesses with Monitoring enabled, Timeline will also keep itself up-to-date, including all future changes detected after the most recent Verify order.
Why don't I see any Timeline events?
Business Timeline events only show for businesses where a Verify order has been placed after Timeline was enabled for your account. Place a new Verify order on an old business to populate its full history.
Other reasons: limited state coverage, no changes filed since formation, or data processing delays (24-48 hours).
Why are some events missing or incomplete?
Data coverage varies by state. Some states provide limited historical data, update infrequently, don't publish certain event types publicly, or have gaps in electronic records.
For businesses without Monitoring enabled, Business Timeline shows events up to the most recent Verify report date. If Monitoring is enabled, events should be comprehensive (barring state-specific limitations).
How often is Business Timeline updated?
New SOS changes appear within 24-48 hours of being filed with the state (varies by state).
Businesses with Monitoring enabled automatically stay up-to-date, so all new changes are automatically reflected. Businesses without Monitoring enabled show all events up to the last Verify order. Ordering a new Verify order will update the Timeline.
What's the difference between Business Timeline and monitoring alerts?
Monitoring alerts (webhooks/emails) notify you when something has changed. They are push-based, per event, often noisy, and have no historical context.
Business Timeline shows a complete chronological history with context, diffs, and patterns across multiple events. One view per business, not per event.
Use them together: Monitoring tells you to look, Timeline tells you what you're looking at. Or use Timeline alone via polling to regularly check for changes on your schedule.
What event types are included in Business Timeline?
Current event types include:
registration.created: Initial registration
registration.updated: Status changed
active,inactive,unknown)name.created: New business name
name.deleted: Business name removed
person.created: New director, officer, or manager
person.deleted: Director, officer, or manager removed
address.created: New address
address.deleted: Address removed
More event types may be added as we expand coverage.
Is Business Timeline included in my current plan?
Business Timeline is currently in preview and can be enabled on a per-account basis.
Contact your account manager or support@middesk.com if you have questions about access.
Will Business Timeline coverage improve?
Yes. We're expanding beyond SOS events to include tax records, licenses, other registry data, risk signals, identity-level timelines, enhanced filtering, and ML-based fraud scoring.
Can I export Business Timeline data?
Via API: Yes. Call the Timeline endpoint and save the JSON response. Use polling with date-based filters to maintain an up-to-date local copy.
Via dashboard: Export functionality coming soon. For now, view Timeline in dashboard or use API to export.
How do I integrate Business Timeline with my existing workflows?
API integration (one-off): Pull the full timeline to complement a KYB/Verify report.
API integration (polling): For businesses with Monitoring enabled, call the Timeline endpoint on your preferred schedule (daily, hourly, etc.) to retrieve new monitoring updates. Use date filters to retrieve only new Monitoring events since your last poll.
Dashboard workflow: View Timeline directly in the Middesk dashboard during manual review processes.
Hybrid approach: Use polling for regular batch updates and webhooks for urgent change notifications.
Your API credentials work for all products. Timeline uses your standard API key.
